In The Ocean Race 2021-22 will compete two classes of boats for the first time in 25 years: the IMOCA 60 class of latest technology and with fils, and the fleet of monotype VO65 that beat several records and showed a huge equality in the last edition
Genoa will be the city of arrival of the next edition of The Ocean Race... the choice of the most important maritime city of Italy to host the Grand Final of The Ocean Race in June 2022 opens the event to a new audience in one of the most passionate places for the sailing of all of Europe... The choice of Genoa as the city of arrival of The Ocean Race has been announced today in the Nautical Hall of Genoa.
In the last edition of the race, the arrival in The Hague was the most equal in the history of the event, with three teams fighting for the final triumph after sailing for more than 40,000 nautical miles all over the world.
Italy has had a close relationship with The Ocean Race, which began as Whitbread Race Around the World in 1973 with three Italian ships on the starting line. Over the years, 11 Italian teams and more than 130 Italian sailors have competed in the first event known as Whitbread and, from 2001 to 2018, as Volvo Ocean Race.
In the last edition, the Italian ocean regatist Alberto Bolzan participated in his second consecutive edition. And the Olympic and World Champion at 49er FX Francesca Clapcich sailed on board the Turn the Tide on Plastic. Clapcich says having the arrival of the race in Genoa will have a positive impact on young sailors throughout the country.
The Ocean Race will start from its port of departure in Alicante (Spain) in the fourth quarter of 2021 and will end in Genoa (Italy), in June 2022... the complete route of the race will be confirmed in the coming weeks, with Aarhus (Denmark) and The Hague (Netherlands) already confirmed as headquarters, as well as Cape Verde, which will be the first stop in West Africa in the history of the race.
