AIDA Cruises is confirmed as a pioneer company in many areas. Thus, by the end of 2020, 12 of the 14 AIDA ships will be equipped to receive energy from land where this technology is available, a practice that has been using AIDASol since 2017 for its regular energy supply at the Hamburgo-Altona power plant.... as part of its "Green Cruising" strategy, AIDA is also exploring the production possibilities of CO2-free liquefied gas from renewable sources.

AIDA Cruises, owned by the Costa Group, the leading cruise company in Europe, has signed a cooperation agreement with the world's most important marine battery supplier, the Norwegian Corvus Energy. The aim of this alliance is to install battery systems on board one of the ships of the IDA fleet in 2020.

Michael Thamm, CEO of the Costa and Carnival Asia Group, commented: "Our long-term objective is the operation of ships without emissions. The electrification of our ships is another important milestone on this path. Together with Corvus Energy, AIDA Cruises will incorporate this new system into one of its ships in less than a year, becoming the first shipping company in the world to carry it out."

The Norwegian-Canadian Corvus Energy company is one of the most recognized suppliers of marine batteries and is considered a pioneer in the development of marine energy storage systems. Other project partners are ABB and Siemens.

After the introduction of low-emission fossil fuel - Liquid Natural Gas - into the cruise industry, AIDA Cruises becomes the first company to use the electrical energy provided by battery storage systems on board cruise ships. As a first step, Corvus Energy will equip an AIDA ship with a lithium ion battery storage system until the summer of 2020. With the use of this technology, the efficiency of the operation of the ship will increase significantly and thus reduce the consumption of fossil fuels. The introduction of battery systems on board other cruises is planned, following the test in this pilot project.

The use of a battery system on an AIDA ship is another important step in the implementation of its "Green Cuising" strategy, a step that is in addition to the one already taken at the end of 2018 when AIDA Cruises presented the world's first LNG-powered ship, the world's cleanest fossil fuel, which has the most cutting-edge technology in the sector. Recently, AIDA Cruises has been awarded the Blue Angel, the German Federal Government Ecolabel, for the environmentally responsible design of AIDAGA. Two other LNG-powered vessels are expected to be in service by 2023.
