The World Wave Circuit PWA 2019 starts in Gran Canaria waters
The first wave season event of the Professional Windsurfers Association (PWA), the Gran Canaria Wind & Waves Festival, was held in Pozo Izquierdo from July 12 to 21. This championship continues to grow and maintain its condition as a reference test within the world wave circuit, and in its 31st edition has struck a new record of participation with the registration of 123 Riders from 22 countries, of which 48 compete in the male category, 21 in female and 54 in junior.
The Morenotwins sports club, the organizer of the event and for which the Daida and Iballa Ruano twins are responsible, is one of the great drivers of this sport among young people worldwide and their efforts in promoting wave windsurfing have borne fruit. It should be noted that between Daida and Iballa they accumulate 25 world titles, being Daida 18 times world champion.
In the purely sporting aspect, the Almerian Víctor Fernández and the Grancanaria Iballa Ruano begin in Gran Canaria the defense of their current world title achieved at the end of the 2018 circuit, while Philip Köster and Daida Ruano will seek to repeat the victory achieved last year in Pozo Izquierdo against the rivals of the size of the Venezuelan Ricardo Campello, the Brazilian Marcilio Browne and Victor Fernández, among others.
In the female category, the Ruano, Daida and Iballa sisters will defend their dominance in the Grancan test in the face of the push of the arubense Sarah-Quita Offringa, the world's subchampion and second in Pozo Izquierdo in 2018.
