The second edition of the Discovery Race, a stage race that will start from Viana do Castelo and that will have the final Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, with stops in Cascais and Funchal, from July 31 to August 14, has already opened the registration deadline... The Discovery Race is a race promoted by the European Sailing Brotherhood.
Born in 2017, when the first edition was held between Lisbon, Cascais and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, this 2019 will be a race with a longer tour and in which the participating cruises will be able to choose to make it all or part of one of the stages.
In addition to the race, it is intended for those who prefer it, to take the form of rally, which will be a relaxed journey taking advantage of the regime of alisian winds that already begin to blow in the waters of the North Atlantic, and which will take the fleet from the peninsula to the Canary Islands passing through the beautiful island of Madeira.
The registration period is already open and will be closed until the 30th of June, the day before the departure of the first stage between Viana do Castelo and Cascais of 192 miles along the Portuguese coast. It's open to the ORC and Open classes.
The Discovery Race was born in recognition of the great Spanish and Portuguese discoverers, especially Fernando de Magallanes and Juan Sebastián Elcano... this year that will also match the Fifth Centenary of the first round of the world, giving the Fernando de Magallanes awards to the ships that invest the least real time and the Juan Sebastián Elcano Trophy of the Spanish Navy.
