The "Sentinel" Height Patrol has begun the African Deployment. Over the next 4 months, the patrol will sail the West Coast of Africa by emphasizing in several countries to engage with the coastal countries' marines and contribute to the maritime security of the area.

The Gulf of Guinea is one of the places in the world where piracy and armed robbery can destabilize global security.

The Navy, under the command of the Defence General Staff, is carrying out this mission in order to show the activity and capacity of its vessels as essential instruments of national security, to defend our maritime interests in the area (fishing, sea-traffic of hydrocarbons) and to contribute to the prevention of conflicts in a particularly sensitive region.

In addition, the Navy is involved in strengthening maritime security in other regions of the world, and takes advantage of its deployments in Africa to make presence and strengthen relations with as many countries as possible. It maintains intense activity under the framework of Cooperative Security in Mauritania, Senegal and Cape Verde, and its action on the African coast, coordinated with other Western countries, such as the United States, France, Portugal and Denmark, is supported by agreements with several countries in the area.

Spain is part of its activities in the Gulf of Guinea within the EU, where the Ministers of Defence of Spain, Portugal, France and Denmark have agreed to increase maritime safety initiatives in the region.
