01 / 09 / 2018: Don Felipe takes in Mahon the command of the Giraldilla, the sailboat that belonged to Don Juan
The Mahono Maritime Club was visited this morning by S.M. King Philip VI on the occasion of the 15th Cup of the King Repsol of the Sea. The monarch arrived at 10.45 a.m., where it was received by its president, Antonio Hernández, and the director of Marina and Fisheries of the sponsoring firm Repsol, Luis Alcázar.
Philip VI embarked on board the Giraldilla, one of the 43 sailing boats from 10 countries that from last August 29 to today participate in the 15th Cup of the King of the Sea that organizes the Club Marítimo with the sponsorship of Repsol and the institutional collaboration of the Consell Insular de Menorca and the City Hall Mahón.
This afternoon, at 7 p.m., the King will preside over the official ceremony for the delivery of trophies, an event that will put the end to the competition of classic and most important ships in Spain.
The Giraldilla is one of the most historic ships in the fleet that participates in the 15th edition of the Copa del Rey Repsol. Fitted in 'yawl' (two masts), the sailboat was designed by Sparkman & Stephens and built by A. Walsted in 1963. It is 15.88 meters long and 4.0 meters manga. Although his first name was' Giralda ', his second owner, Manuel Lapiche, renamed him as Giraldilla. He was one of the three ships (next to the Saltillo and the Giralda) that he used Don Juan de Borbon, grandfather of King Philip VI.
The Giraldilla competes in the category of Classics (ships launched between 1950 and 1975). His palmarés has a victory in the 2004 Repsol King's Cup, a sixth place in the 2015 edition and a fifth place in the 2016 edition. This year he sails in the second position of the general.
30 / 01 / 2018: The Copa del Rey de Vela Classica Repsol began in the waters of Menorca
The 15th Copa del Rey Repsol de Barcos de Epoco took off this noon with an inaugural day of races from which they make a hobby. The wind was set at 50 degrees and with 14 knots of average in the race area, between the exit of the natural port of Mahón and the urbanization of Binibeca, with a first and a fourth sections exposed to the strong tidal generated by the Gregal (NE) and the other two to the socaire of Punta Prima. A journey of just over 17 nautical miles in which the most modern and fast ships of the fleet drew the fall in the intensity of the wind in the middle of the afternoon and whose end, inside the Mahon Rade, offered spectacular images.
The Kelpie (1903) was placed in front of the Crab Epoch class, which brings together the boats launched before 1950 and with trapezoidal gear. Pelham Olive's boat obtained an income of only 12 seconds over the Marigan (1898), by Tim LIesenhoff, who had been mistakenly classified as a winner in the first version of the provisional general. The Kelpie enjoys a 2% bonus under the characteristics of its gear that had not been taken into account. Both ships seek to repeat victory in the Repsol King's Cup. Marigan was crowned in 2015 and Kelpie in 2016. The third place was for another 19th-century ship, the Ilex (1899), by the shipowner Germán Ruiz.
In the Bermudian Epoch class (formerly Marconi), where the ships before the middle of the 20th century are quoted with triangular sail, the Argentine Cipino II (1949), of the shipowner Daniel Sielecki and patronized by Martin Billoch, set the way for the reedition of the victory obtained last year at the Maritime Club of Mahon. The ship designed by Germán Frers crossed the line of arrival after 3 hours and 6 minutes of crossing, and took four and a half minutes of advantage in time corrected to the second classified, the Santana (1938), a yawl designed by Sparkman and Stephens. The sailboat, sponsored by Connor Wallace, did not enter the forecasts, but it obtained remarkable returns on two of the favorites: the Fjord III (1947), by Scott Perry, and the Blitzen (1938), in which the tactic work is performed by the ocean navigator Jules Salter, a participant in the Volvo Ocean Race on board the AzkoNobel.
A favorite that did not fail in the first day was the Argos (1964), by Barbara Trilling, with Eduardo Méndez a la rea, who won his fourth consecutive victory in a Spanish Championship of Classical Boats, after winning the three sleeves of the Illes Balears Classics Regata of the Club de Mar Mallorca, a regatta that can be scored before the King Repsol Cup. The boat of the New York Yacht Club defended its rating in front of a mostly superior fleet in length and made it clear that its goal is to repeat the triumph in the category of Classics (ships built between 1950 and 1975, as well as true replicas to the original design) that it already obtained in the 2012, 2015 and 2016 editions. The Giraldilla (1963), the boat that belonged to Don Juan de Borbón, the grandfather of King Philip, gave up six minutes in compensation and sailed in second position of the general, followed by Margarita (1972), by Ignacio de Llano. The Menorcan Pepe Negrete, under the command of the Yanira (1954), was unable to assert his knowledge of the race field and had to conform to the fourth provisional position. The fastest sailboat of this class (and of the fleet as a whole) was the Galvana, of the Pella brothers, a 1974 Sparkman and Stephens and built in aluminium that today would have needed to take out almost three quarters of an hour to win the race.
The Spirit 46 Legolas (1996), by Jens Ricke, defeated in the Spirit of Tradition class, with the Puma 34 Lohengrin (1974) sailing a very short distance from his stern and the Stiletto (1961) far more backward. The first two classified will maintain a closed struggle for victory that has been denied to them for years by the Calima (1970), eleven times champion of the Repsol King's Cup, absent this year from the competition for "technical problems."
29 / 08 / 2018: Don Felipe will participate in Mahon in the Cup of the King of Sailing of Classics
The Club Marítimo de Mahón has hosted this noon the official presentation of the 15th Cup of the King Repsol of Epoco, in which 46 ships from ten countries will participate. The competition will begin tomorrow Thursday, August 30, and will continue until Saturday, September 1. The announcement of the presence, for the first time in the history of the race, of His Majesty King Philip VI, has focused the meeting this noon between organizers and journalists.
The president of the Club Marítimo Mahón, Antonio Hernández, has received with "great joy" the news that Philip VI, who in August 2016 accepted the presidency of honor of the entity, has now accepted the invitation to participate in the 15th edition of the Cup that bears his name. "It is an honor," said Hernández.
With last-minute changes, on Saturday morning, Philip VI will take part in the third and final race of the Cup, and in the afternoon will preside over the trophy delivery.
The fleet will be divided into the categories Epoo Craja (ships launched until 1950 with trapezoidal gear), Epodo Bermudiana (prior to 1950 and with triangular candle), Classics (launched between 1950 and 1975, or replicas faithful to ancient designs) and Spirit of Tradition.
Nacho Marra, director of the Maritime Club and the race, has assured that it will be a very competitive edition, with the presence of several ships that aspire to victory and in some cases to repeat successes of previous editions. This is the case of Epoco Kelpie (1903), winner in 2016; Marigan (1898), winner in 2015, or the Rowdy (1916), which was awarded the King's Cup of the 2015 and 2016 editions in the Bermuda category, and which comes from winning the Illes Balears Classics of the Club of Sea in Mallorca, or the Argentine Cippino II (1949), winner in 2017. In Classics a closed confrontation is expected between the Argos (1953), three times the winner of the race; the Yanira (1952), with six wins, and the Giraldilla (1963), which in recent months is sailing to a high level.
23 / 08 / 2018: 50 jewels of the sea in the "Cup of the Rey-Sailing Classic Menorca Repsol" in late August

The menorcan race is noticeable for the Mare Nostrum Trophy of the Royal National Cruise Association... the participants represent ten countries: Germany, Spain, Italy, France, England, Malta, Argentina, Netherlands, United States and Uruguay
The Mahono Maritime Club again faces the most important organizational challenge of its season with the setting up of the 15th edition of the King's Cup - Menorca Repsol Classic Sailing, a competition that will take place in the waters of Menorca from August 28 to September 1 and in which a 50-year-old ships will participate, considered many of them jewels of the international naval heritage.
The great favorite is the Argos, by Barbara Trilling, points to a new success in the Mahonese Rada after winning with authority the latest Regata Illes Balears Classics... the very beautiful ship designed by Holman and launched in the Carabela shipyards in 1964 usually very fast in the Menorcan waters.. its palmaris in Mahon... second in the 2011 test, first in 2012, fourth in 2013, first in 2015, and again in 2016.
The Giraldilla (1962), from Valle de la Riva, and the Yanira, from the firm Regata Experience, which features the experienced Minorcan regatist Pepe Negrete as a timonel, will be its great rivals in Classics, with the permission of the Galvana (1974), of the Pella brothers.
In Epoco Craja (ships launched until 1950 with trapezoidal gear), the Marigan (1898), by Tim Liesenhoff, the oldest ship in the fleet, points to the leader. The sailing boat of the Real Club Náutico de Palma is a regular of the menorcan test and its palmarés is enviable (it was second in 2014, first in 2015 and second in 2016). His most prominent rival in the Copa del Rey de Barcos de Epoco will be another 19th-century ship, the Ilex (1899), by shipowner Germán Ruiz López. The presence for the first time in Mahon del Tilly XV (1912), a ship with a length of 10 meters and a displacement of 1.8 tons, introduces an element of uncertainty in the forecasts, as there are no references of previous clashes that allow to calibrate their mutual options.
In Époco Marconi (pre-1950 ships with triangular sail), the fight could be between the Rowdy (1916), by Tim Goodbody, who defeated in Mallorca, and the three designs of German Frers built in the late 40's: Fjord III (1947), Joanne (1948) and Cippino II (1949), by Daniel Sielecki, last year's winner. This class includes the presence of the Sonata (1937) and Mercury (1938) vessels, both owned by Jordi Cabau and sailing through the Mahono Maritime Club.
The organization has planned to divide the fleet into five classes: Big Boats (with the Blaumar, of 24 meters, and the Amazon, of 22, in liza), Spirit of Tradition, Time Crab, Time Marconi and Classics... the tests will be held on 30 and 31 August and 1 September, with traces yet to be determined.
