that beats records in Europe by contributing €47,860 million to the European economy in 2017

The cruise industry hit records and contributed EUR 47,860 million to the European economy in 2017, according to data provided by the International Association of Cruise Lines (CLIA) in its new European Economic Contribution Report. This means an increase of 16 '9% compared to the previous figures published in 2015.

Last year, direct expenditure by the cruise industry reached €19.7 billion, above €16.9 billion in 2015.

In terms of employment, between 2015 and 2017 the cruise industry generated more than 43,000 new jobs across Europe. Currently, there are a total of 403,621 employees in cruise ships and industry-related businesses. Wage and other remuneration for European employees reached €12.770 million.

As the global cruise industry continues to grow and expand to new destinations, Europe remains a nerve center for this industry. This trend is based on three key factors:

Europe represents the second largest issuing market in the world - 6 '96 million Europeans made a holiday cruise in 2017, 7' 8% more than in 2015.

Europe remains the second most popular cruise destination in the world, only over the Caribbean. The study shows that 6 '5 million passengers embarked from European ports, which is 6' 1% more than in 2015.

European shipyards are at the heart of the world's cruise construction industry. The world's largest and most innovative ships are still being built here, and the expenditure on construction and maintenance has increased for the sixth year.

In 2017, cruise lines spent EUR 5.6 billion on European shipyards, an increase of 22 '4% over 2015. There are currently 66 ships scheduled for delivery up to 2021, with a total value of more than EUR 29.4 billion.

With €1,481 million in direct economic contribution (€4.252 million in total, including indirect and induced effects), Spain is the fifth largest market to benefit from the cruise industry in Europe, with an increase from the previous figures provided by 12% in 2015. This contrasts with the lower growth of 7.5% of the economic contribution in Europe over the same period. The cruise industry also generated 31,233 jobs in our country (direct, indirect and induced), 9.3% more than in 2015. This figure is slightly higher than that generated at European level, which is 7.7% more.
