"America's Cup" or what they give away 100 Guineas
In 1851, on the occasion of the celebration in London of the Great Universal Exhibition, a sailing race was scheduled for August 22, called Queen's Cup, whose winner would receive a silver trophy designed in 1848 by the official jeweler of the Royal House, Robert Garrard, valued at 100 gold guineas and acquired in London by the Marquis of Anglesey, who donated it to the British Royal Esquadron (legendary club that organized the race and provided the trophy). This is why this trophy is also known as the Cup of the Hundred Guinean.
The tour consisted of a tour around Wight Island, a summer place par excellence for the English located in the British Solent. Members of the New York Yatch Clubof the United States on board the America (in a choleta)they faced the British ships with a larger length. No one gave a dollar for the Americans: a small boat, with the velamen held on a few sticks anchored to its deck with a certain inclination,... but here was the secret of the new technology that was used by Americans to sail more quickly in the direction of a knot,..., winning 14 ships from the UK fleet.

The Goberno of S.M., it was no grace to lose to an ex-colony. The world's oldest moderate sports competition, which was revitalized by President JFK himself in the early 1960s, was born with the support of his wife Jacqueline.
A very famous anecdote tells how the S.M. Queen Victoria I asked in a moment of the race "Who goes first?," to which they answered: "America, Your Majesty." "And second?" the queen inquired. "Your Majesty, there is no second!" was the answer. The Trophy was later donated by the mower of the Goleta Americato the New York Yacht Club, for the club to promote competition between nations by organizing a race that had such a trophy as a prize. Since then the trophy has been called the American Cup. The shame of the British was paid for by several components of the staff of the government of S.M., in terms of the naval industry, as an ex-colony had rejoiced in the British Empire. Since its very establishment in the distant year of 1851, the American Cup has been and is a field for new technological experiences of both the naval design itself and the latest generation materials.
In 1870 the first defense of the trophy was held in New York, and was always successfully defended by the ships of the New York club,..., until 1983 when theAustralia II, of the Perth Yach Club was imposed by 4-3 on Team Denis Conner of the New York Yacht Club. The 132-year hegemony was over. Australia received its athletes as heroes, and it was three days of National Fiesta that were declared by the Australian Government.
In over 160 years the Cup has changed a lot. For example in the 19th century and the first part of the 20th century the aspiring or challenging ships had to reach New York by sailing, which obviously meant a huge handicap. In the first edition held 19 years after the mythical Wight Island Regatta in 1870, the British John Ashbury with theCambria, faced a fleet of 17 American ships. It was defeated, but raised several important legal objections: having had to compete against a fleet and not against a ship, the time compensation system, and the integrity of the Regatas Committee. In 1876 and 1881 the reviewers were representatives of the Canadian clubs These were built in the Great Lakes and moved their ships through the channels. The competitive level of these teams was considered disappointing.

Perhaps the J-Class are the most beautiful "American cups" of those who have competed since 1851. Only three units survive among them the "Endeavour,"... in 1939 they were removed from the competition,... surely for their very high cost.
The year 1887 is fundamental for the Cup, as a set of conditions known as "Dead of Gift", which make up the basic structure of the competition. The document contains clauses to avoid problems in the first editions of the competition. Between 1899 and 1930 the challenges were presented by the Ulster Yacht Club that presents armed ships by Sir Thomas Lipton, British magnate. Lipton spends a fortune on projects, but is famous all over the world for his presence in the American Cup. What invests in sailing, rents it with many interests in the world of the Te. It should be noted that with Lipton is born the concept of sports sponsorship, and the profitability of an advertising investment, as was the case.
In 1930 the spectacular ships are introduced for their length and trees called the J Class They have a steel helmet. These units that are authentic "stradycaruis de la mar"They would disappear in 1939, scrapped for the war industry. There are currently only three of them that are considered authentic museum pieces. Another change that happened in 1930 was that the race field, chosen by the New York Club and which had until then been on the coast of Staten Island (New York), passed to the coast of Newport (Rhode Island).
During World War II, the Cup would be paralyzed, and it would not be relaunched until 1958. In that edition are adopted the ships of the class 12 meters, smaller than his predecessors. From then on, the challenges became more frequent, as a result of the downsizing of the ships. In 1970 it was the first time that there were several challenges, which had to compete with each other in theChallenge Selection Seriesto rule who would face the "defend." Until then there had been only pre-selection among possible defenders -Defender Selection Series-. The winner is given theCopa Herbert Claiborne Pell(Herbert Claiborne Pell Cup) and since 1983,Louis Vuitton Cupwhich is now known asChallenge Selection Series.

The global echo of Conner's victory in Australia was huge. Ride by car on 5th Avenue, reception at the White House, Frank Coppola film,..., covers major USA magazines. Unbelievable for the candle!
After the 1983 American debacle, the 1987 edition of the great Frak Coppola immortalises in the film "The Power of the Wind. Denis Conner recovers what he had lost four years ago and now it's the big party in the United States, even the White House sends the presidential plane to Australia, to take the heroes back home. However, the Guineas 100 Cup would not return to the Nwe York Club, as it does to the San Diego Yacht Club. The next challenge took place in 1988 and the ships did not belong to the same class: a huge 134-foot New Zealand monocash was defeated by a small 60-foot American catamaran, in which NASA itself collaborated in design. The disparity made the competition very uneven and led to the adoption of a new class of yachts: the IACC.
1992 marks a milestone for the Spanish sailing, as a Spanish ship participates in the Copa del América, the "Spain 92 Fifth Centenary" belonging to the Monte Real Club de Yates de Baiona being patrolled by Pedro Campos Calvo- Sotelo. The Spanish ship reaches the third day of the leader, after imposing on Australia and Sweden and losing with the French Ville of Paris. In the end we stay at the door of the semi-finals: fifths classified among the eight registered. Project that was a real success.

The 32 Copa América held in Valencia was an unprecedented success. The Spanish effort was rewarded by the image we gave, and the excellent role of the Iberdrola that managed to reach the semi-finals of the Louis Vuitton Cup.
Spain also participates with "Rioja de España" in the next edition, but in honor of the truth it does not achieve the success of 1992,..., in that year of 1995 the Cup again leaves the United States, winning it the Royal Squadrom, with his Team New Zealand, who held it in his possession for two editions. To defend it, the New Zealanders decided that there would be no selection of defenders (Defender Selection Series), but Team New Zealand would be the only candidate. Until then, it was common for there to be a pre-selection of teams, presented by different shipowners of the defense club, and for the winner to be the club's representative, even if it was not the same as the one who had won the last defense.
As a result of the abolition of the pre-selection of defenders, many New Zealand team regatists were available to register for other teams. This was how the Swiss Ernest Bertarelli managed to recruit a team for the 2003 Cup that participated with the Alinghi, from the Nautique Societ de Ginebre, taking away New Zealand's Cup in 2003 and successfully defending it in 2007. This year the Copa del América, which was the 32nd edition, was held in the waters of Valencia, participating in the "Iberdrola" representing Spain that managed to compete in semi-finals. In 2o10 new edition of the Cup in Spanish waters, and Larry Ellison's BMW that competed for the Golden Gate Yacht Club of San Francisco won the victory: the Cup returned to the United States after it was held in Oceania and Europe. In 2013 Defender, the Golden Gate Yacht Club of San Francisco changed the type of boat again, creating the AC72 class to compete with multicascos,..., in the 34th edition of the Oracle Cup was imposed on the New Zealand...
