Tor Christian Sletner new Maritime Vice President of the CLIA in Europe

The International Association of Cruise Lines (CLIA) today announced the appointment of Tor Christian Sletner as Maritime Vice-President in Europe. Tor Christian, who will be installed at the CLIA office in Brussels and report to the CLIA European Secretary General, joins CLIA from the Norwegian shipowners' Association, where he was responsible for environmental activities at both the national and international levels. Sletner will take over this post on 1 July 2018.

Regarding his appointment, Tor Christian commented: "I am excited to join CLIA and its current members to work on building the reputation of the cruise industry. There are challenges ahead of sustainability and some critical public opinion, but the only way forward is mutual respect for the views of others, as well as the search for common points in difficult situations. The cruise sector has enormous potential to help local communities grow, for the benefit of their population, their economy and the environment. I wish to contribute to the realization of this purpose."

After the appointment, Andres Chrysubromou, general secretary of CLIA Europe, said: "We are very happy that Tor Christian has agreed to join the CLIA team. It will provide a wide range of experience due to its journey through various organizations, and we hope that it will lead our Maritime Policy programme and show the commitment that industry has to respect and preserve the environment in which we operate."

Tor Christian Sletner has worked in the Norwegian Shipowners Association since 2010. After 15 years of service in the Armed Forces, he began his civil career in 1994 at the University of Vestfold. In 2003 he became Deputy Director of the Coast Administration, responsible for preparing for possible oil spills in Norway. It has also been engaged for short periods of time with the Det Norske Veritas and the environmental organization WWF.

His first training in the Navy was at the Coastal Artillery School of Appeal, at the Naval Academy's Operational Line and at the Navy's Staff School. He also has a degree in economics from the University of Oslo and an MBA in Strategic Management from the Norwegian School of Business.

Tor Christian was a permanent spokesperson for the NOx Fund in the environment-friendly navigation forum and group secretary of the WG5 group. He is a permanent spokesman of the Norwegian delegation to the IMO and is President of the European Community Shipowners' Association's Energy Efficiency Group.
