Depending on the results obtained after the data assessment, the necessary adjustments may be made to adapt the methodology used on commercial fishing vessels.

The oceanographic vessel Emma Bardán of the General Secretariat of Fisheries begins the fishing research campaign Selectivity 2018, starting from the port of Passages, whose objective, for the second consecutive year, is to find technical solutions that allow the use of more selective fishing gear in the trawling fleet in the Gulf of Vizcaya. A campaign that will end in the middle of this month

The purpose of this campaign is therefore based on the recovery of devices that, added to the trawl network, can increase the selectivity of the trawl, assessing the effectiveness of these to achieve reductions in the discards ratio.

These tests are included as part of a series of measures to achieve the optimization of the fleet operating in the area of study, based on the objectives set out in the Common Fisheries Policy. In addition to the analysis of the selective fish systems, the survival of some demersal species will be analysed.

The tasks will be coordinated by a team of scientists from the AZTI- Tecnalia, thanks to the coordination between the General Secretariat for Fisheries and the AZTI Foundation, to facilitate the access and use of the General Secretariat vessels and their equipment to the research staff. In this way, scientists are made available the most appropriate instrument for the purposes of the campaign, as well as the optimization of resources for the benefit of all institutions.
