The current management team of the Volvo Ocean Race will continue to work with the different stakeholders in the coming weeks to take the race to the next commercial and sports level, with the aim of communicating more details about the future at the end of the current edition of the race

While the Volvo Ocean Race 2017- 18 lives its last weeks of competition with a very exciting final line towards the Hague goal, the organization today confirmed that the next edition of the race will come out in 2021 and that a new owner takes over. Atlant Ocean Racing Spain, a company run by Richard Brisius, Johan Salén and Jan Litborn, will take over the Volvo Ocean Race taking over from Volvo Group and Volvo Cars, the co-owners of the event over the last 20 years.

Brisius, Salén and Litborn have a wide experience in the sailing world, as they have worked on seven campaigns of the Volvo Ocean Race in the last 28 years. Brisius and Salén began as regatists in the 1989-90 edition, before winning as team leaders leading the EF Language victories (1997-98) and Ericsson 4 (2008-09). More recently, they led Team SCA, the only exclusively female team in the 2014-15 edition. In November 2017, Brisius and Salén were appointed president and co-president of the current edition of the Volvo Ocean Race.

In this sense, discussions with Alicante, Port of Departure of the Volvo Ocean Race for the next two editions and headquarters of the central offices and the Museum of the race, continue to advance for the celebration of a 'mid any' in 2019. The organizers of the race are analyzing the option of having two classes of ships in the 2021 edition, the current Volvo Ocean 65 monotypes and another class, yet to be determined.

Although the next edition will start in 2021, the objective is to resume competitive activity as soon as possible to provide stakeholders with a longer period of activation on the way to the next output, and to allow future teams to have the opportunity to design an extensive training program. Volvo Cars will continue to sponsor the 2021 edition, and different discussions are already being held with the current sponsors and host cities for the 2021 edition and previous competitions.
