The autonomous ship of the future "Yara Birkeland" will come true next year
The Yara Birkeland ship will be the world's first fully electric and autonomous container ship with zero emissions. Kongsberg is responsible for the development in the application of the latest key enabling technologies, including the sensors and integration necessary for the remote and autonomous operations of the ships, in addition to the systems of drive control, electrical drive and battery.
At 120 TEU (20-foot units of measurement) the upper container carriers are opened. It will be a fully battery-powered solution, prepared for an autonomous and unmanned operation. The ship will reduce NOx and CO2 emissions by replacing diesel-driven truck transport by approximately 40,000 trips per year. This green initiative will help to meet the UN sustainability objectives and improve road safety and congestion.
