The Canary Islands is one of four female nominees for 2017 Rolex World Sailor of the Year awarded by the World Sailing

The Spanish Tara Pacheco has been nominated for the world's best regatist award 2017. The crew of the Nacra 17 patroniado by Fernando Echávarri has been chosen as final candidate thanks to the brilliant season that he has signed up to the podium in the five tests in which he has participated throughout the year. The other finalists for the prestigious award are Marit Bouwmeester (NED); Martine Grael and Kahena Kunze (BRA); and Sarah-Quita Offringa (ARU).

Pacheco and Echávarri rose with the triumph in the Princess Sofia Trophy in Mallorca, the first race in which they competed after the games of Rio 2016. At the Sailing World Cup Hyeres, the Spanish duo defended the title obtained in 2016 in France and added a second gold to his season. At the end of the World Cup, which was held in Santander, Pacheco and Echávarri were also raised with gold. Coinciding with the European Championship of the class, the Nacra 17 premiered navigation with fils. The Canary Islands, along with the Galician pattern, demonstrated an early adaptation to the new ship and the Spanish team won European silver. The prestigious award of the best regatist of the year was established in 1994 as the winners of the award the Spanish Olympic medalist Theresa Zabell along with Peter Blake and Robin Knox-Johnston. In 2005 Fernando Echávarri, Pacheco's current partner, was recognized with Anton Paz as the best regatist of the year. In 2010, Blanca Manchón was also awarded the award and in 2011 the award was awarded on Iker Martínez and Xabi Fernandez. The final decision will be known on Tuesday, November 7 at the award ceremony to take place in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
