"Marina Rúkón-Doñana" winner of the Huelva Regata - La Gomera
The GP42 "Marina Rúkón-Doñana" by Ricardo Terrades is the winner of the Huelva-La Gomera ocean race. The system of compensated times allows to compete to ships of different characteristics and dimensions in the same race. It allows struggles between huge state-of-the-art ships and smaller or modest models. It allows to face David against Goliath on equal terms. This is what has happened to such powerful rivals as the "Adrián Hotels Macaronesia" of Daniel Adrián, second and the Galbula of Peter G. Ybarra, third.
After its 69-hour record, the impressive V70 "Port of Huelva" needed to get its competitors out more than a day to win the Huelva ocean race. The Gomera, but only nine hours after its arrival, the GP42 "Marina Rúkón-Doñana" appeared planning on the line of arrival of the Gomera to proclaim itself the absolute winner of the competition after an indistinguishable journey of just over 78 hours... David had defeated Goliath.
Caves of a hard race
After arriving in Puerto, Ricardo Terrades, shipowner of the ship narrated the hardness of the competition: "the second half of the journey has been very demanding, we have had winds of more than 42 knots and sailed at very high speeds on a boat designed for races of just a few hours without any comfort or protection... we were continuously wet, chilling water and making repairs... we have sailed three days to a hundred percent, we bend the guards to make the most of the ship and that has been the key of the race: to maintain the tension and not to lower the guard."
Huelva shrimp, lyophilized food... and no spoons
During the more than three days of navigation, the nine crew members of the Marina Rúbion-Doñana have been fed lyophilized food provided by Eatlyo... A critical moment in the race was when the first night of the journey the crew realized that, in the meantime, they had not embarked spoons to take their only food, lyophilized soup. A small, but serious, problem they solved with plastic bottles and a knife.
The winning crew de la regata Huelva - La Gomera was formed by
Luis M. Doreste, Aleix Gelabert, Nacho Murube, Álvaro Fernández Candau, Ignacio Diez de la Cortina, Manuel Martín Ovando and Ricardo Terrades, and has been sponsored by Marina Rubicón de Lanzarote, the environmental council of the Junta de Andalucía, the sevilan hats Fernández and Roche and the Diputación de Huelva.
