Security will prevail in the Discovery Race that leaves Lisboa-Cascais on Sunday
The route between Lisboa-Cascais and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is 731 nautical miles, following the orthodromic between the two geographical points, departure and arrival of the 1st edition of the Discovities Race, and which will start from the Portuguese capital next Sunday August 27.
The organization that is in charge of the European Confraternity of Sailing, the Royal Nautical Club of Gran Canaria, the Association of Lisbon or Naval and the Naval Club of Cascais, has the safety of the ships and regatists as one of the main concerns. The director of the Discovery Race, Eugenio López Santos, explains that "for me all races are equally important, be it a world championship or a weekend race. The safety of the participants is above all, and in this case we have to be much more alert, as the ships will make an ocean race of height and many of the crews are not professional, there will be moments that will be far from land and there can happen anything."
This is why, in addition to the safety recommendations of the race, the ships will carry a real-time tracking system contracted by the race and can be seen via the Internet (http: / / www.locuatodo.com / regata /? id = 163), and also on a mandatory basis a satellite phone for any emergency that may occur to contact the organization - which will be 24 hours pending from the fleet - the rest of the ships or with the Maritime Rescue.
The fleet must follow an established route with forced crossing points, to prevent, among other things, entering Atlantic areas where a rescue may be complicated. This is why the exit, which will take place on Sunday morning in front of the Monument of the Discovery and the passage through a buoy located in front of Marina de Cascais that will be left by port and from there they will take the direction to the island of Alegranza where there will be a virtual beacon 3 miles from the Faro de Alegranza and that will leave by starboard, between Alegranza and the island of the Graciosa to the north of Lanzarote, to go directly to the buoy of Castillete located at the gates of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and where the final line will be, and that will be in the direction of the race.
