Ecomar and Coca-Cola cleaning action on the island of Cortegada (PN Atlantic Islands)

Theresa Zabell along with the 26 children of the Galego de Vela Center wanted to return to the same beach last year to sponsor and clean it every year
The Ecomar and Coca- Cola Foundation have redone a cleaning of coasts in the Natural Park of the Atlantic Islands, specifically on the island of Cortegada, located in front of the town of Vilagarcía de Arosa. With this action they have completed the schedule for July 2017, in which six cleanings have been carried out on the coast of the Iberian Peninsula. The aim of this action is to inculcate children from the sailing school of the Galician Sailing Centre, respect for the marine environment, care for the planet and to be aware of the importance of sustainability.
The Ecomar and Coca-Cola Foundation are trying to ensure that every time a coast cleaning is done, the children involved in it commit themselves to sponsor the area and return every year to clean it. Ecomar already has several clubs that do these actions, such as the Club de Mar, which has the island of Illetas, in palm. The Portuguese children of the Clube do Sado, as well as the Galego de Vela Centre of Vilagarcía, have also been committed.
It is the second time that Ecomar and Coca- Cola choose the Natural Park of the Atlantic Islands to carry out one of these solidarity actions. Along with 26 children from the Galego de Vela Center, they have cleaned 900 metres of ECOMAR beach and have taken out, especially many painted wood and plastic bags, a total of 191.71 kilos of waste. Last year, the 38 Ecomar volunteers cleaned 700 meters of coast, which was then called "ECOMAR Beach." Once the action was completed, all the waste collected was weighed and the 191.71 kilos will become Coca- Cola products that will be donated to the Food Bank.
Theresa Zabell, president of the Ecomar Foundation, addressed the children before getting to work. The double gold medalist stressed that "the sea is a source of life and that is why we have to look after it and look after it so that it does not end and continue to give us the resources to eat. This year we return to the Natural Park of the Atlantic Islands, to our" ECOMAR Beach "to try to clean up what has been dirty in a year, so I ask you to put all your efforts into it and let Cortegada clean, so that flora and fauna continue to develop." The double Olympic champion had an impact on "we only have one body and one planet, so we don't have a chance to change it as we do with clothes, ships, bicycles, so we have to watch them so we don't run out of it." Zabell explained that "we are pioneers in coast cleaning with children, we have been doing so for many years, specifically since 2007. We are proud that others have decided to do what we do. In this way, we are more the ones who will fight for the health state of our seas and get to clean up more kilometers of coast, collect more kilos of waste and raise awareness of more children." From Coca-Cola was Gemma Dominguez, communication manager of the northwest area.
