Navantia begins the construction of the first AOR for the Australian Navy
Navantia has started the construction of the first AAOR B217 logistics support ship for the Australian Navy at its facilities in Fene, in Ferrol, with the cutting ceremony of the first steel for block 220-3. The contract, signed between Navantia and the Australian Government on 9 May 2016, includes the design and construction of two logistics vessels, with an option for one more, and the maintenance of them for an initial period of five years.
The two ships, based on the "BAC Cantabria" built by Navantia for the Spanish Navy and adapted to certain Australian requirements, will be built in the Navantia shipyards in Ferrol Bay. It means 3 million hours of work for this area, as well as 35,000 hours of production and supply of the main engines, diesel generators and reducers to be carried out in the shipyard of Cartagena. The 35,000 of the Integrated Platform Control System should be added to that. With regard to its impact on employment, approximately 1,800 direct and indirect jobs will be generated annually until 2020, the date of delivery of the second unit. Of these, more than 330 would be direct employees, more than 530 employees from the auxiliary industry and more than 900 would be indirect employees generated by other suppliers.
