Ecomar and Coca- Cola start one more year to the "Cleanup of Costas" initiative

The season will have a total of six cleaners. The first of these will be held on the Cantabra beach of Luaña, in Cóbrezes, with the help of children from the Santa Juliana school
One more year the Ecomar and Coca-Cola Foundation are joining together to continue to raise awareness of the importance of keeping our planet clean through the "Cleanup de Costas 2017" campaign, which both organizations have been carrying out for seven years, collecting waste from different points of the Iberian peninsula. This initiative, led and created by the Ecomar Foundation and promoted by Coca- Cola, aims to raise awareness among the smaller ones of the importance of keeping our seas and coasts clean and teaching them to recycle waste by depositing them in the appropriate containers.
Every year, Coca-Cola awards the work of the small volunteers of the Ecomar Foundation by converting every kilo of waste they collect into products of Coca-Cola to donate it to the food banks in each area and to make it reach people who are in a vulnerable situation. These actions are part of the commitment of Coca- Cola to the environment that it develops through its environmental strategy with initiatives grouped in four key areas: water, emissions, packaging and sustainable agriculture. Since 2011, Ecomar and Coca-Cola, thanks to the help of 960 schoolchildren and 128 volunteers, have cleaned more than 31 km of coast, through 20 cleanings that have only been the collection of almost two tons of waste and more than 62,000 cans of product donated to the Food Bank since 2014.
In particular, this year, 6 cleanings are to be carried out at different points of the Iberian peninsula during the months of June and July with students from 7 to 14 years of schools and nautical clubs in the area. The president of the Ecomar Foundation, Theresa Zabell, will also give a master class on recycling to boys and girls who participate in each of the cleaners. The first of the cleanings will take place on Monday, June 19 on the beach of Luaña, Cóbrezes (Cantabria), with the help of students from the Santa Juliana school. The action will start at 9: 30 in the morning with a talk about the importance of the recycling of Theresa Zabell. The students will be provided with gloves, cap, and garbage bags of different colors to select the waste together with Ecomar volunteers. Once the action is completed, all the waste collected will be weighed to convert those kilos into Coca- Cola products that will be donated to the Food Bank.
The next destination will be the Cape of Gata on July 4 with students from the Sailing Surf School. Then, on 6 July, in Valencia with students from the sailing school of the Royal Nautical Club of Valencia; on 12 July at the Puente del Duque in Hoyos del Espino in the middle of the mountains of Gredos; and at the end of July in Vilagarcía de Arosa (Pontevedra), with students from the Galician de Vela Centre. The initiative has crossed borders and for two years the Ecomar and Coca- Cola Foundation also work with schoolchildren from Portugal, where the "Cleanup of Costas" programme has been very welcome. Thus, in 2017 one of the planned cleanings will be carried out on July xx in Setúbal, with the students of the Clube do Sado and the hand of the Portuguese Olympic regatist, Nuno Barreto.
Theresa Zabell: "At the ECOMAR Foundation we are pioneers in the Costa Cleanings with children in Spain. We have been taking care of the sea for 18 years, and more than 10 cleaning coasts and teaching to recycle the younger. We have already collected almost four tons of waste, creating a lot of awareness among the" adults "of the future. Many of the children who have been through these campaigns have come from the hand of Coca- Cola, with which we have the pleasure and satisfaction of having been having 7 years of influence on how important it is to keep our planet clean, and, in addition to collecting waste, we close the circle by donating products from Coca- Cola to the Food Bank to share it among the most disadvantaged. We have only one body and a planet that we can never change and we have an obligation to care for them, so we are very proud that so many associations and institutions have followed our steps and, of course, very happy to collaborate with all of them. It is a good sign that the path we took years ago is the right one." From Coca Cola they highlight: "In Coca- Cola we wanted to be one more year next to Ecomar to promote this initiative that is part of our commitment to the environment and to society. These seven years of collaboration have been of particular importance to us because they help us to raise awareness among young people about the importance of protecting our environment."
