Team Akzonobel has closed the registration of one of the best Spanish sailors, the Galician Roberto Bermudez de Castro. Chuny, who faces the seventh Volvo Ocean Race, comes from winning the last edition with the Abu Dhabi.
Bermudez de Castro, born on 1 March 1970 in La Coruña, debuted in the race in the 1993-94 edition with the Galicia Pescanova of Javier de la Gandara, and since then has exercised his master's degree in the ranks of the Assa Abloy (2001-02), Brazil 1 (2005-06), Delta Lloyd (of which he was patron in 2008-09) and Camper (2011-12), in addition to his successful campaign with the Abu Dhabi in 2014- 15.
After his victory in the last edition, Chuny joined Juan Vila as the only two Spaniards who have won the Volvo Ocean Race in the entire history of the race, after Vila achieved it with the Illbruck in the 2001- 02 edition.
Because of this unpayable baggage, Chuny is very clear about what he can bring to Team Akzonobel. "To the team what I bring is experience and desire to win as if I were a young man under 30. To this race you have to come with a desire to win it and give everything you have within your abilities. If we all on the team do that, we'll have a lot of chance of winning. It is clear that there are more teams, but if we prepare well we can choose everything," he says.
The Spanish gives us his recipe to win the Volvo Ocean Race. "To win this race you have to try to get together as soon as possible, prepare as best possible, manage all the factors better than others, not make big mistakes and not risk too much, be multi-valent and be very strong as a team. Now we're going to be boys and girls and that's something new for everyone, with the crew mix you have to get a very strong team," rapace.
Chuny analyzes the one who is already his seventh project in the race, which will be patronized by Simeon Testipont. "The best things Akzonobel has is that Siemon has got a good group of experienced people, including himself, and young people with a lot of desire. We have a new ship and everything I'm seeing is being organized as it has to be, the direction we walk in is the right one."
Team Akzonobel has also announced the registration of three other regatists who already know what it is to win the Volvo Ocean Race: the Brazilian Joca Signorini, old known from the Spanish hobby as he was in the Telefonica in 2011- 12, New Zealand Brad Jackson and British Jules Salter.
Together with them, Team Akzonobel also unveiled other crew names: the Dutch Olympic subchampion Annemieke Bes, the Australian Luke Molloy and the young New Zealand Brad Farry.
The Simeon Testipont pattern blindly trusts the crew he's forming. "I have chosen a team that mixes maturity and experience with youth and vigor. Among all we have done 24 Volvo Ocean Races and five Olympic campaigns, to which we add the enormous ability to bring the best performance to the ship of our under 30."
Finally, the team announced Australian Bryce Ruthenberg and Dutch Eduard van Lierde as reserve regatists in case someone gets hurt or gets sick.
The new Volvo Ocean 65 of the Dutch team is currently on the Lisbon Boatyard and will start sailing in early June and will be baptized at the team base in The Hague.
Four teams have already confirmed their participation in the Volvo Ocean Race 2017-18, and the remaining weeks will be announced.
Among the rivals of the Akzonobel are the Dongfeng Race Team (patronized by French Charles Caudrelier, MAPHRE (Xabi Fernández) and the 11th Hour Racing Vestas (Charlie Enright).
The race will take place on October 22 and will travel 46,000 nautical miles, going through a total of 12 Headquarters Cities around the world. The arrival will be in The Hague in late June.
