The heavy candle opens the Sail Racing PalmaVela 2017
The bay of Palma marked its best in the informal premiere of the season of great races in the Mediterranean. The first day of the Sail Racing PalmaVela quoted in the field of play the largest ships of the fleet of 141 participants in this 14th edition, including the classes Wally, Maxi 72, ClubSwan 50, Swan 45 and IRC, which enjoyed good wind conditions of southern component in the surroundings of the 15 knots. The provisional leaders at the end of this first day are: the British Magic Carpet Cubed in Wally class and Aegir / Seven Seas in IRC 1; the Germans Momo in Maxi 72, Earlybird in ClubSwan 50 and Elena Nova in Swan 45; and the Spanish Pelotari Project in IRC 2.
Wally, in coastal format
Twelve Wally units had never been seen in Palma before. A historic fleet that premiered its lockers with a single 31-mile coastal race that passed along the southern coast of the island. The tour led them to a buoy located in Illetas and another in front of Santa Ponsa, from where they would return to the line of arrival inside the bay. The first to complete the tour was the British Wallycento Magic Carpet Cubed by Sir Lindsay Owen Jones, with Ian Walker to the tactic, who invested 2 hours, 39 minutes and 15 seconds. A wind roll in the last few meters made the leader suffer, who crossed the line just 20 seconds ahead of David Leuschen's Galateia. After time compensation, Magic Carpet Cubed is the first leader of Wally's provisional, both in the Sail Racing PalmaVela and in the class's international circuit.
Momo, unanswered in Maxi 72
The Maxi 72 completed two sleeves. The Momo of the German Dieter Schön was imposed on its rivals in both assaults, both in real time and in compensation. Today he debuted the Pepe Cannonball of Italian Dario Ferrari, which premiered with a three and a two and is second of the provisional ahead of the Bella Mind of American Hap Fauth, winner of the 2016 MAPHRE King's Cup.
European Debut of the ClubSwan 50
Another point of interest of the day was the European debut of the ClubSwan 50 monotypes. The ships of the Nautor's Swan shipyard completed the first three sleeves of a season that will bring them to the Royal Nautical Club of Palma on two other occasions: the MAPHRE King's Cup in August and the The Nations Trophy in October. The first manga of the day confirmed the equality between the monotypes designed by the Argentine Juan Kouyoumdjian, with a very tight victory of the Earlybird of Brandis Hendrik over the Niramo of Sönke Meier- Sawatzi for just a second. The German ship would repeat triumph in the second test and would fire the day with a second to lead the provisional with three points of rent on its immediate pursuit.
Elena Nova dominates Swan 45
The Swan 45 monotypes were also able to complete three sleeves on their first day. The three had the same boat as the Elena Nova of the German Christian Plump, who signed an impeccable card, with three wins of three possible, and leads the classification with three points of advantage over the second.
Double ration in IRC
The IRC fleet is divided this week into two groups, IRC 1 and IRC 2. At the end of the first day, the interim leader in IRC 1 is the British Aegir / Seven Seas of Romain Mouchel and Markus Kemp, with partial wins. In IRC 2 he leads the Spanish Pelotari Project by Andrés Varela (2-1).
The competition continues tomorrow from 12: 00 with the addition of 104 other ships of the classes ORC, Classics, AICO J80, Sotheby's Dragon and Flying Fifteen. The program will consist of coastal tests for the IRC, ORC and Classics, and a ration of barlovento-sotavento sleeves for the rest of the classes. Only the adapted sailing participants Hansa 303 will remain on the ground, which will compete from Saturday. The different classifications are as follows:
