The Galician Gony Zubizarreta and the Portuguese Carol Henrique have been proclaimed this Sunday champions of the Pro Zarautz 2017, the fourth European stop of the International Circuit Qualifying Series of the World Surf League that has been held on the gipuzcoana beach of Zarautz. After a first day marked by the windy conditions of the sea, the competition reached its highest splendor on the weekend thanks to the arrival of a new tidal wave that provided quality waves to uncover the best surf level of the largest European surf exponents. Together with the waves, good weather and the mass influx of the public have just reaffirmed the success of the event, which has a wide programme of complementary activities.

The final day of the event began at around 9 in the morning with the development of the final rooms that were filled with the elimination of Garazi Sánchez, the last Basque surfer in competition, after the fall of names of the size of Aritz Aranburu, Hodei Collón, Imanol Yeregi or Nadia Erostarbe. The passage to semi-finals left last year's winner, the canary Jonathan González, who was left in the hands of French Jorgaan Couzinet, one of the most surfers in the form of the event, moving all the responsibility of national representation to Galician Gony Zubizarreta.

With the Portuguese Carol Henrique and the French Maud Le Car collecting the lyre, the female final was the first to be thrown into the water. The Lusa surfer premiered with 8.43 of the judges, the result of a worked wave of left that filled with backside turns to the shore, a score to which he added a 7.70 with which he would maintain control of the sleeve until the end of it, while his rival the French left his skin trying to find waves with potential to score on.

Gony Zubizarreta: "I would like to thank the whole public for their support. I've been coming to Zarautz since I was a kid and I have a lot of friends here. It is amazing to be in the water competing and to see the beach full of people cheering," said the recent champion of the Caparica Spring Surf Fest. The male final coincided with the moment of the greatest public influx on the beach, which further boosted the dispute of the decisive confrontation between Jorgann Couzinet and Gony Zubizarreta. Couzinet took the initiative, chaining two good wave scores with 7.50 and 7.0. When everything seemed decided in favor of the French, and only 10 minutes to the end, the Galician connected a second good wave (7.6 points) to add to his locker and move to lead the sleeve. The last minutes of the duel were very exciting with the French trying by all means to find a winning wave, something that he did not get for the satisfaction of the local public delivered with the Galician surfer.
