Toyota Motor Corporation's hybrid technology is incorporated into the world of nautical.

Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) has developed Japan's first recreational boat with a hybrid system in parallel, as part of a feasibility study on hybrid vessels to be conducted between July 2018 and March 2021 in Tokyo, Japan.

More specifically, Toyota will provide the hybrid PONAM-28V model to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government at no cost. In addition to its use for the maintenance of the docks and other facilities in the port of the Japanese capital, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government will use the PONAM-28V to make the necessary visits to various headquarters of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo Bay.

The Toyota PONAM-28V will also be used to travel through the Tokyo Port channel, both for the inhabitants of the capital of Japan and for the visitors of the city.

When adopting the hybrid system in parallel on a recreational boat, Toyota seeks to ensure its autonomy by using two types of electricity generators: the combustion engine and the electric engine. In addition, EV-mode navigation generates very few emissions and very efficient fuel consumption, as well as reduced noise levels.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government will provide the operating data of the hybrid ship to Toyota to help validate the overall performance of the hybrid system, as well as to verify the functionality and improvement areas of the hybrid ships.

To date, Toyota has created the PONAM-35, 10.6 meters long, the PONAM-31, 9.4 meters long, and the PONAM-28V, 8.5 meters long. Toyota will continue to work on the development of maritime activities, creating attractive products that facilitate mobility in the field of water, with a view to offering its customers a lifestyle that will satisfy them as much as possible.
