The "Mapfre" breaks its mast by training in the Rías Baixas, face the Sailing World
When he was on test navigation, about seven miles south-west of the island of Ons in the middle of Galicia's Atlantic Islands Park... with conditions of 25 knots of wind and four-metre-high waves, the crew of the Spanish ship of Vuelta al Mundo "Mapfre" saw as the mast its Vo-65 was seen below, after breaking below its first cruise. On board there was no need to regret any personal misfortune, and at all times the most absolute calm among the crew members, who after finding that there was no accident, and no more damage on board than the rora of the mast, were dedicated to the work that was advisable in a situation like the one suffered. The team's emergency protocol was immediately activated and for security reasons, the Maritime Rescue was warned, which was kept waiting for news from the ship. At the time the crew managed to regain control of the ship, the emergency services were informed that they were heading back to the Pontevedrés port of Sanxenxo by their own means, with propulsion of an outboard engine.
"It has been a state and then start falling for starboard," said Pablo Arrarte, head of guard and patron of the "Mapfre" on this trial day. "We were sailing in a fairly comfortable way for the ship, with wave also through, so for the moment we don't have a cause why it's broken. We'll have to analyze the data and the damaged parts in order to draw a conclusion."
