According to FAO in its annual report, marine food production is no longer based on the capture of wild species, to be increasingly established, in the cultivated species. In 2014 a milestone was reached when the contribution of the aquaculture sector to the supply of fish, for the human consurm, for the first time exceeded that of fish caught in the natural environment. The global total production of traditional fisheries in 2014 was 93.4 million tons, of which 81.5 were from marine and 11.9 from continental waters. China continued to lead the catch volume, followed by Indonesia, the United States and the Russian Federation. The main species captured was the "colin" (barejo) in the waters of Alaska, which managed to displace the "anchoveta" that he had commanded since 1998. The North-West Pacific remained the most productive area in terms of catch fishing, followed by the Central-West Pacific, the Non-East Atlantic and the Eastern Indice... the situation, according to this report, of the Mediterranean and the Black Sea, remains alarming. With regard to continental catches, the positive trend in recent years continued, with a 37 per cent increase in the last decade. Spain is in position 18 among the main fishing producing countries in its medium, while in the aquaculture section it is in the tail van.
Aquaculture has been the trigger of the impressive growth in the supply of fish for human consumption. This section has increased considerably in recent years: on the basis that it provided only 7% of the total fish in 1974, it increased to 26% in 1994 to reach 30% in 2004. China produced 45.5 million toned in 2014, or 60% of world fisheries production from aquaculture!
