Baleària orders two ferries powered by gas in Italy for 200 M €

The shipping company maintains its commitment to LNG with these twin 'smartships', with capacity for 800 more people
Balearia has closed an agreement with the Italian shipyard Cantiere Navale Visentini for 200 M €, to undertake the construction of two new ferries powered by gas. These new units are added to the cruise ferry that Baleària ordered in early 2016 the shipyards La Naval and that, like these two ships, will also be powered to gas and equipped with the latest technologies to be more ecoefficient. This intelligent ship, which will be the largest operating in the Mediterranean and among the largest in the world, will incorporate services specific to a cruise by enhancing the experiential journey of passengers. With an investment of 187 million euros, it is expected to start operating on the Balearic lines in 2019.
Baleària has reached an agreement with the Italian shipyard Cantiere Navale Visentini to build two twin ferries with dual gas engines, which will have a length of 186.5 meters and a capacity for 810 people and 2,180 linear meters of load and 150 cars. The total investment in these innovative ships will be €200 M and is expected to be operational by the end of 2018. With the construction of these two units, the company takes a step further in its commitment to the use of natural gas and the eco-effience applied to the fleet. The vessels can reach a speed of 24 knots thanks to two dual engines with a power of 20,600 kW. The use of liquefied natural gas and other clean energies will reduce CO2 and NOx emissions by more than 40% and eliminate sulphur and other particles emissions. Both ferries, of identical characteristics, will have 123 cabins and 402 passenger seats. With regard to on-board services, the company's bet is to bring added value on the voyages in order for passengers to enjoy their travel. In this way, Baleària presents a wide range of services on board, with a la carte restaurant, self-service, bars, shop and audiovisual programming, as well as children's workshops and magic performances, among others.
