The Volvo projects a Legend Regatta in Gothenburg - The Hague
The Volvo Ocean Race will commemorate its 45 years of history with a Legends race in the final stage of the 2017-18 edition between Gothenburg and The Hague. All the ships that have participated in both the Whitbread Around the World Race and the Volvo Ocean Race, since the first edition of 1973-74, are invited to join the Legends Race 2018. The race will have the same route, and will be done approximately at the same time, as the last stage of the Volvo Ocean Race 2017-18, which will leave Gothenburg on June 21. This announcement was made at the Meetingspot regatta seminar in Gothenburg, and takes the witness of the successful Legends Regatta that took place before the departure of the 2011-12 edition in Alicante and of the exhibitions that were made both at the Volvo Ocean Race Museum in Alicante and at the Gothenburg goal in the last edition in 2014-15.
Among the participants in this seminar was Tracy Edwards, the patron of the Maiden, made up of an exclusively female crew, who achieved two stage victories in his class in the 1989-90 edition and is now planning to gather his crew on his old boat for the 2018 race."A few years ago they found the Maiden in a very bad state in the Seychelles, and since then I have worked very hard to bring him back, restore him and restore the glory he had""said Edwards. "We will not do the transport to the UK to leave it as new, and our goal is to bring together all the female crew of 1989-90 to compete in the new Legends Race 2018."The Legends Race plan includes a Maxi class, a Volvo Ocean class 60 and an Open class. Both Sweden and the Netherlands have a great history in the Volvo Ocean Race and have many fans who have followed the race during all these years."The Legends Race will add a lot of excitement to the Gothenburg stop because there are many fans in Sweden who are very faithful to the history of the Volvo Ocean Race," said Camilla Nyman, CEO of Gothenburg & Co, an organization of the stop in Gothenburg. "We will welcome in the heart of Gothenburg to well-known sailing and regatists, and fans will be able to see legendary ships and very familiar faces."Frank van der Peet, director of the team that organizes the goal of the race in the Hague, added. "The Netherlands has a long and successful history with the Whitbread and the Volvo Ocean Race, so we are excited to welcome these magnificent and historic ships to The Hague."
