The "Mapfre" is the third team officially confirmed for the hardest event in the world of sailing, which will leave Alicante on Sunday, October 22 and take the teams along a 45,000 nautical mile route around the world, as "Dongfeng Race Team" and "AkzoNobel" confirmed their participation last year.

The "Mapfre" will be back on the departure line of the Volvo Ocean Race for the 2017-18 edition, as announced by the Spanish team. Supported by the Madrid-based global insurance company, it is the third team officially confirmed for the hardest event in the world of sailing, which will leave Alicante on Sunday, October 22 and take the teams along a 45,000 nautical mile route around the world. In the previous edition of the race, held in 2014-15, the "Mapfre" won the stage of Auckland (New Zealand) and achieved three other partial podiums. Its return is the result of the success of the project in both sports and commercial terms. Pedro Campos will again monitor the "Mapfre" project, which will uncover the names of his master and crew soon. In eight of the twelve previous editions of the Volvo Ocean Race, formerly called Whitbread Round the World Race, have competed Spanish ships, although the country continues to seek its first win in the general."It's fantastic news to be able to confirm a Spanish team for the next edition, and of course, it's great to see another sponsor returning to the race after a successful campaign""said Mark Turner, CEO of the Volvo Ocean Race. "With the recent confirmation of Alicante as the Port of Departure of the next three editions, and with the important role that Spain has played in the history of the race, it will be great to see Spanish fans gathered again in the pants in October to encourage their team, the Mapfre", he added. From the departure in Alicante on October 22, the teams will compete on board their Volvo Ocean 65 monotypes on a route that stops in Lisbon, Cape Town, Melbourne, Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Auckland, Itajai, Newport (USA), Cardiff and Gothenburg before arrival in The Hague.
